Our Story

An old idea, brought back into the light

Somewhere in an archive right now, there's a canvas nobody has looked at properly in decades. Not because it's bad (often it's the opposite), but because the artist fell out of fashion, a flashier movement stole the spotlight, or someone filed it away decades ago and simply never came back for it. Art history is full of these small disappearances. We find them slightly annoying.

Folk & Shepherd exists to undo a few of them, one print at a time.

Why this matters to us

We go looking for pieces with a real story behind them: tied to a place, a technique, a moment someone was clearly obsessed with getting right. Not decoration for decoration's sake, but a small window into how someone, somewhere, once tried to make sense of the world (a slightly dramatic way to describe a woodblock print of a wave, we know, but it's true). That search has taken us through Japanese ukiyo-e, Victorian matchbox illustration, frontier-era American painting, and archives full of work that never got the audience it deserved the first time round.

For most of history, owning work like this meant buying an original or, at best, a gallery-grade copy, historically a rich person's game either way. We think that's a bit silly. A two-hundred-year-old idea about the sea, or the seasons, or a mountain painted a thousand times and never quite the same way twice, doesn't lose its meaning because it's priced for a flat instead of a country house. If anything, it means more when more people actually get to live with it.

So that's the job, really: find the work worth rediscovering, reproduce it with actual care, and price it so that owning a piece of real art history is a good decision rather than a luxurious one.

How we do it

We're small, on purpose. Every collection starts with research into the artist, the period, and the technique long before it's anywhere near a product page. We're just the sort of people who'd rather over-read about a Hiroshi Yoshida travel sketch than not. We print to order rather than holding stock, which keeps waste down and means every piece is made for the person who actually bought it, not sitting in a warehouse hoping someone eventually will. More on why that matters on our Our Reproductions and Shipping & Delivery pages

Made to order

Nothing is printed on a hunch. Every piece is made once it's actually bought, with no warehouse full of unsold guesses.

Archival quality

Museum-grade giclée on cotton rag paper. Built to outlast trends, house moves, and possibly you.

Priced to live with

Real art history, without the price tag that usually guards it.

We're based in the UK, we ship pretty much everywhere, and, a handful of collections in, we're only just getting started.
